Director Alouidor's vision for the school is "...to have a well structured school capable of competing with schools [in larger communities]...A better school to motivate parents to keep their children in our community for a quality education."
After an encounter with a group of children at a beach in Northern Haiti in October 2020, AKOUNOUKA visited their school to see how we could partner with them to create a better learning experience. What we found is that the school is in disrepair. There is no access to bathrooms or even latrines. Pigs and other creatures wander through the structure even when the children are around, the roof leaks, the floor is made of dirt and the walls are made of bamboo. When it rains, they have to cancel class or dismiss early. The desks and benches are broken or rotted. How can anyone expect children to reach their fullest potential in an environment like this?
After performing an assessment of the existing building and school land, as well as the accessibility to the community, AKOUNOUKA has drafted the project for rebuilding the school using PBB (Learn more about PBB on our blog). Below is the existing school building along with the projected school building AKOUNOUKA plans to build.
(Existing Building is 765 sqft)
(Projected Building is 1200 sqft)
The projected 1200-sqft building, utilizing the PBB method has an estimated construction budget of
$18 per square foot.
